Dedication to the Lovely suzanne
The Lovely Suzanne, aka Suzanne Hale, Sweetheart Suzanne, Rose Empress Suzanne and The Benevolent Dictator of the Roxy Restaurant left us this year but left a better community and better organizations because of her amazing life. Known as a mentor, a friend and a leader she was also a mother, grandmother, partner and community organizer. One story serves as an example..
During the height of the AIDS crisis the court in Tijuana reported their frustration with Persons dying of AIDS literally being left street side after they died. The hospices couldn’t get funeral homes to pick them up if they weren’t in body bags, and they couldn’t buy body bags. This end of life disrespect was not to be overlooked as our gay and transgender friends were dying- the artificial lines on a map didn’t make it okay. Suzanne gathered a few friends in Portland and they held the first Tijuana party, raised funds, bought body bags, and sent them to the hospice in Tijuana.
This event continues 3 decades later to provide services and support to several hospices and abandoned youth organizations south of the border. The last time we took a load of medical supplies across the border the guards stopped us, emptied the vehicle, accused us of smuggling medical supplies into Mexico, and assessed is a tariff payable before we were released (with no help reloading the supplies). Two hours after we had been stopped we continued to head to the hospice. Suzanne’s response…. Concern that we were late to the hospice and that she may run out of smokes for the trip (we found some).
She gave local street kids the chance to work and get off the street- and few ever let her down because they knew she cared for them and believed in them or she wouldn’t have given them the chance to work with her and her extended family at the Roxy. Covid messed up the economy , her restaurant, and her team but the final blow was the city deciding to redevelop the property and push out the existing businesses. She closed her business and had a garage sale as she was thrust into retirement. It was a devastating loss to her, and about a month later a heart attack in her sleep devastated her family and the community.
We honor The Lovely Suzanne, and know that her passing means we need to step up our work to help fill the void left in her wake. Good night Suzanne, we miss you

A Letter from Mx Sweetheart of Portland XXXIV
I came into this year with the goal of increasing representation of transmasc people in the drag community, and show that being a femme performer doesn't change who I am as a trasmasculine person. I don't know if I succeeded at this. It isn't something that is easy to quantify or measure. I do know that this title and organization gave me the space and opportunity to create so many new connections while raising money and resources for vital organizations for queer and trans youth.
My solo event was a clothing swap and fundraiser for SMYRC with a cast of all youth performers, yet another underrepresented facet of our community. We were able to bring a car full of clothing and drag to SMYRC for their youth.
Another aspect of our year that Sue and I tried to cultivate with our events is creating space in these types of organizations for performers and events that aren't your standard pageant type of drag. Which brings us to our holiday show of Zombie Prom on Halloween, which benefited the Trevor Project.
I would not have made it through this year without Sue From Corporate by my side. Sue I am eternally grateful to have you as my friend and my drag mother. I wouldn't have wanted to do this with anyone else.

A LETTER FROM MISS SWEETHEART OF PORTLAND XXXIV
I ran for Miss Sweetheart XXXIV on a complete whim. I had thought about it briefly and was not planning on running until the day of interviews when Miss Sweetheart XXXIII Coco Jem Holiday asked me why I wasn’t running. So I put in my application and had absolutely no plan whatsoever. But being the incredibly competitive person that I am, I was determined to win. It’s no secret that I am a huge introvert offstage, and going around asking people for money was an absolutely terrifying concept to me. But what I am good at is performing and for that three week period time, every dollar I made performing went towards raising money. It was exhausting, but I did it. And I didn’t do it just for me. I did it to show all the weirdos like me, all the drag monsters and punk rock performers that we can win shiny hats too. We don’t have to conform to win a pageant, we can win by being our most genuine selves and helping the community in the process. And I’m glad that I got to spend this year being my most genuine self.
The past sweethearts of Portland
History of the Sweethearts of Portland
The Sweethearts of Portland are a state and federally registered 501(c)3 non-Profit charitable corporation, devoted to raising fund for other non-profit groups.
The Sweethearts of Portland was founded on the spirit of Rose empress Velvet Monet, who was commonly referred to as the Sweetheart of Portland. In 1986 the Title became official and Velvet and Robert Thomas because the first crowned Mr. and Miss. Sweetheart of Portland.
The titles of Mr. \MX.\ and Miss. Sweetheart of Portland differ from other Portland titles in that the titleholders are determined, not by a talent contest or popular vote, but on who can raise the most money for charity. This is done at the Sweethearts Annual Raffle contest held on or around Valentines Day each year. Candidates sell raffle tickets and raise cash donations for the raffle over the course of three weeks. The contest culminates at the Annual Sweetheart Ball where the winners are crowned.
In recent years the Sweethearts of Portland have added X. titles for our non-binary/trans siblings who feel seen with a title that is gender non-specific.
