A Letter from Miss Sweetheart of Portland IV

Picture
Good evening Ladies and Gentlemen,

Unforseen circumstances have prevented me from celebrating with you this evening, for the 34th annual Sweethearts of Portland Ball.
Who would have imagined, 30 years ago, when I was crowned as Miss Sweetheart IV, that Sweethearts organization would grow into what you see today.
What an amazing journey for the community to watch and experience, and will continue to do so in the years ahead.
Who would have also guessed that a new title would emerge under the Sweethearts of Portland umbrella, The Duke and Dutchess of Hearts.
Then ground braking ideas sprang forth and two new titles were formed to include our Trans and Non-Binary community members - MX Sweetheart and DutchX!
Congratulations to Coco Jem Holiday and DJ Queer Cub on your year.
My best wishes to our candidates this year.
Our lives are all the more rich because of each of you.
Love and Light,

Miss Sweetheart of Portland IV

A LETTER FROM MISS SWEETHEART OF PORTLAND XXXIII

Picture
It has been a crazy year with a lot of ups and and a lot of downs. When I first stepped into this role I was unsure of who I was going to be and how I wanted to give back to my community. I've always viewed myself as an activist, but I felt like with this title I could really do something that would hopefully change the landscape of who I was all together as a performer and leader.

Addam (DJ QueerCub) and myself stepped up during Covid. No place was really open so we had to raise money electronically which isn't inherently a bad thing. However it made it to where we didn't get to connect with our community as past Sweehearts got to do. Instead we cultivated an online community. If anything it will be known as the one regret I have as a past sweetheart.

The shining star event of the year was the Covid Vaccine event. Drag literally saved lives. My goal was to get Brown and Black folks vaccinated and we were able to do just that. If you don't recall, black and brown folks didn't have access to quality healthcare, so providing them an outlet in a predominately black area of town made all the difference. If my drag career has taught me anything it's that if we have the ability to help another person we should take it.

Thank you so much to everyone who has supported me throughout the year. I could not have done this without an incredibly strong support system. I have to give a shoutout to my confidant and mentor Flawless Shade and Kimber Shade. They helped me through some of the hardest moments of my life during this last year.

To my haters, I thank you for driving me to be an even better version of myself.

Finally, to my husband. You did this journey with me. We now have a ton of memories because of this year. As the song goes . . . "Even when we die, we'll look down from up above, remembering the night that we two fell in love. We both will shade a tear and he'll whisper as we're reminiscing, 'I can hear the bells'".

A Letter from Mr. Sweetheart of Portland 33

34 years and counting... It’s incredible to imagine all of the events, all the charities, all the lives that have been changed by this organization! The Sweethearts of Portland has become a centerpiece of our community that I have been proud to represent over this past year. Through insurmountable successes and strife, we prevail - a family of sorts, created by our compassion for one another.

COVID hit many people hard, especial minority groups who tend to have more difficulty finding health care. Our Ms Sweetheart 33 Coco Jem Holiday, my life partner, threw a free walk in vaccine drive/clinic right off the corner of MLK Blvd & Fremont. I partnered with our Dutchess of Hearts Sin Nombre for a fundraiser benefiting the DeafBlind Center for those who were even more impacted by social distancing. Together, we helped boost up our community through this hard time.

I've had the extreme pleasure to work alongside several of my Sweetheart siblings recently, and everyone has always gone out of their way to be supportive and loving. I appreciate all of my Sweetheart family for their contributions to our community, causes, and continued efforts to right systemic wrongs.

I want to personally thank our entire board this year, for the guidance and reassurance that we could do what needed to be done. I want to thank every Sweetheart who has come before us, paving the way for future endeavors. I want to thank specifically my partner, my love, my Sweetheart Coco Jem Holiday for being the best reign, and life, partner I could have ever asked for ♥

History of the Sweethearts of Portland

The Sweethearts of Portland are a state and federally registered 501(c)3 non-Profit charitable corporation, devoted to raising fund for other non-profit groups.

The Sweethearts of Portland was founded on the spirit of Rose empress Velvet Monet, who was commonly referred to as the Sweetheart of Portland. In 1986 the Title became official and Velvet and Robert Thomas because the first crowned Mr. and Miss. Sweetheart of Portland.

The titles of Mr. \MX.\ and Miss. Sweetheart of Portland differ from other Portland titles in that the titleholders are determined, not by a talent contest or popular vote, but on who can raise the most money for charity. This is done at the Sweethearts Annual Raffle contest held on or around Valentines Day each year. Candidates sell raffle tickets and raise cash donations for the raffle over the course of three weeks. The contest culminates at the Annual Sweetheart Ball where the winners are crowned.

In recent years the Sweethearts of Portland have added X. titles for our non-binary/trans siblings who feel seen with a title that is gender non-specific.

The Sweethearts of Portland are a state and federally registered 501c3 Nonprofit charitable corporation, devoted to raising funds for other local nonprofit groups. Since 1989, we have raised extremely needed funds for hard working and community benefiting nonprofits.
Every year, our new Mr, MX, and Miss Sweetheart choose their patron charities.  These are the charities they grow with, learn from, and coordinate multiple fundraisers on behalf of the charities.  We always look forward to working with and helping out our community as best as we can.
Join us for our public meetings the fourth Monday of the month held virtually through zoom.
